Woman rescued from swift Kern River after clinging beneath a rock
A woman who fell into the Kern River near Bakersfield was pulled to safety after being spotted by an aerial rescue team and retrieved by ground crews.
Around 3:50 p.m. on July 25, a citizen flagged down a park ranger after a woman fell into the Kern River in the Kern River Canyon, close to Bakersfield. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office dispatched an air support crew, which made three search sweeps before a tactical flight officer identified the woman clinging to the underside of a rock on a steep cliff. Ground teams arrived, threw a life jacket to her, and she managed to secure it while still holding the rock.
Rescuers then used a rope-connected flotation device to pull her from the swift, cold water. Emergency medical personnel took over to evaluate her condition, though details on injuries were not released. Officials highlighted the coordinated response and warned that the river’s strong currents and hidden hazards remain dangerous even for experienced swimmers.
