Wyndham residents protest secret plan for 40-metre NBN tower

Homeowners in Wyndham, Western Australia, say they were only informed this month about a proposed 40-metre NBN telecommunications tower built on land excised for that purpose in 2025.

A parcel of land on the outskirts of Wyndham, Western Australia's most northern community, was earmarked for a 40-metre NBN telecommunications tower after a unanimous council vote in June 2025. The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley only announced the development to adjacent homeowners in July, opening a 21-day public comment window. Long-time residents Harry Ciccotosto and Glen Highett, who have lived near the proposed site for over a decade, voiced strong disappointment, citing safety concerns, loss of scenic views across the Cockburn Ranges, and potential decline in property values.

NBN Co defended the choice, saying it resulted from detailed technical, engineering and planning assessments and council input. However, critics note that the site-selection report was released after the consultation period started and that other proposed sites were farther from homes. Construction reportedly began in January, despite the absence of prior notification to affected landowners.
