Yankees Sign veteran catcher Mitch Garver to minor-league contract
The New York Yankees added former Silver Slugger catcher Mitch Garver on a minor-league deal, assigning him to their Triple-A affiliate.
In a move to bolster catching options, the New York Yankees inked former Silver Slugger catcher Mitch Garver to a minor-league contract. Garver, released by the Seattle Mariners earlier this week, will join the Yankees’ Triple-A club, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, and retains an opt-out provision for later in the month. The 35-year-old previously backed up Cal Raleigh in Seattle, posting a.175/.302/.294 line over 149 plate appearances and a 14.8% walk rate despite a high strikeout percentage.
Garver’s résumé includes a 2019 Silver Slugger with the Minnesota Twins and a 2023 World Series championship with the Texas Rangers. While not a defensive standout, his right-handed power offers the Yankees a potential offensive upgrade if his bat rebounds. The signing follows weeks of speculation about acquiring a right-handed hitting catcher before the trade deadline.
Why it matters
The Yankees aim to improve catching depth and offensive potential as they chase a postseason berth.
