Yemen's army strikes Houthi sites after renewed Marib shelling

Yemeni government troops opened fire on Houthi positions across several front lines on Saturday, a move described by a military spokesman as necessary to safeguard unarmed civilians. The operation followed Houthi missile and drone attacks on Hadramout and Marib that killed at least 30 government soldiers and wounded 15 on Thursday. Deputy Information Minister Mohammed Gezan said the Houthis had again shelled civilian neighborhoods in Marib with missiles and drones, after a Friday strike that killed two civilians and injured 14.

Marib, which shelters more than 2 million of Yemen's displaced population, was also the site of a contested attack on a military camp claimed by the Houthis. Experts note the renewed fighting raises the risk of a broader conflict, especially as the 2022 truce has lapsed and regional actors may become more involved. The United Nations has called for de-escalation amid ongoing Houthi strikes on oil tankers in the Red Sea.
