Yoga’s Boat Pose Offers a Full-Body Core Workout Beyond Traditional Sit-Ups
Certified yoga instructor Melissa Leach explains that the boat pose (Navasana) engages multiple core muscles and can be more effective than standard sit-ups.
Melissa Leach, a certified yoga teacher and strength coach in Philadelphia, highlights the boat pose (Navasana) as a comprehensive core exercise that improves balance, stability and spinal support. She notes that while traditional abdominal work strengthens specific muscles, the pose requires the entire core to work together, engaging obliques, lower back, transverse abdominis, hip flexors, glutes and back muscles. Leach describes the pose’s "V" position and provides step-by-step instructions for both static holds and dynamic repetitions.
To accommodate varying fitness levels, she suggests bent-leg variations, using a cushion or wall for support, and a chair-based version for seniors or those with limited strength. The routine, she says, can enhance posture, lower-back health and functional movement in daily activities such as lifting groceries or rising from a chair.
Why it matters
Understanding a simple, low-impact exercise can help people improve core strength and reduce injury risk in daily life.
