101-year-old Nigerian great-grandmother arrested for cannabis sales
Nigeria’s drug enforcement agency says 101-year-old Esther Ogunmabo was detained in Ogun state for selling cannabis after her shop burned down.
According to one outlet Drug Law Enforcement Agency, 101-year-old Esther Ogunmabo was arrested in Ogun state after being found with 90 grams of skunk cannabis packaged for retail sale. She told investigators that she turned to the illicit market following a fire that ruined her provisions shop, and that a daughter residing in Lagos arranged regular deliveries of the drug. The NDLEA granted her bail and ordered counseling due to her age, though she remains liable for charges, and her daughter has also been taken into custody.
In the same period, the agency seized more than 42 kg of narcotics from a wooden boat intercepted off Akwa Ibom state en route to Cameroon, and recorded its inaugural seizure of drugs originating from Thailand. NDLEA chief executive Mohamed Marwa oversaw the bail decision and the broader enforcement actions.
