107-year-old WWII veteran Norman Irwin honored with military funeral in Coleraine
Norman Irwin, a 107-year-old World War II veteran and Northern Ireland’s oldest man, was laid to rest with full military honors at New Row Presbyterian Church.
The funeral of Norman Irwin, who died at 107, took place on Saturday at New Row Presbyterian Church in Coleraine, featuring the flag of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers draped over his coffin and a full ceremonial guard. Irwin’s wartime service in North Africa and later as a sergeant in the REME was celebrated alongside his civilian achievements, such as helping establish the Coleraine Winemakers Club and co-founding the local Rotary Club and Agivey Anglers Association.
He received a British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours last year. Reverend Jonny McKane led the thanksgiving service, noting Irwin’s lifelong health, independence, and his marriage to Margaret after meeting her in 1945. Grandson Chris spoke of his grandfather’s humor, ingenuity and the legacy he leaves for his family.
