13-Year-Old Boy Dies After Shirt Catches Screw on Miami Park Slide
A 13-year-old boy died when his shirt became trapped on a screw inside a slide at Shenandoah Park in Miami, and he was later declared brain-dead.
On September 25, 13-year-old Olvin Cabrera Valladares went to Shenandoah Park in Miami and slid down a large enclosed tube. Inside the slide, a screw caught his T-shirt collar, causing him to become trapped and choke. A man visiting the park with his children later found Olvin hanging in the slide, pulled him free, and performed first aid until emergency services arrived.
Olvin was transported to a hospital, placed on life support, and was pronounced brain-dead on October 1. Miami officials launched a non-criminal investigation, temporarily cordoned off the playground, and reopened the slide the following day without confirming repairs. His family has started a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $11,000 to cover funeral costs.
