13-Year-Old Inventor Creates Inexpensive Device to Harvest Air Moisture for Farmers

Aniket Sarkar, a 13-year-old, built a low-cost system that extracts water from dry air and entered it in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Aniket Sarkar, aged 13, engineered a simple atmospheric water collector built from common supplies, seeking to provide an alternative water source for agriculture in arid U.S. regions. The device draws on the fact that even seemingly dry air holds vapor, converting it into usable water for crops. Developed with the needs of Midwest and Western farmers in mind, the prototype is intended to be affordable and easy to construct.

Sarkar entered the 3M Young Scientist Challenge to showcase his work and gain access to expert guidance for further development. While still experimental, the invention reflects his broader interest in environmental engineering and future climate-adaptation technologies. He cites 3D printing as an inspirational tool for rapid prototyping and envisions expanding his efforts toward larger environmental challenges.
