1976 Underground Concrete Home in Springfield Survives 1990 F4 Tornado

A concrete house built into a Springfield hillside in 1976, costing about $70,000, withstood an F4 tornado in 1990 and remains hidden today.

In 1976, Dennis Spencer built a concrete home partially buried in a north-facing hillside outside Springfield, Missouri, for about $70,000, employing cast-in-place concrete and post-tensioned beams designed to hold 250 pounds per square foot. The roof is layered with 14 to 15 inches of soil and plants, allowing wildlife to treat it as part of the landscape. The design proved its resilience when an F4 tornado swept the area in November 1990, leaving the underground house mostly undamaged while surrounding structures suffered severe loss.

Owners Tim and Monica say the house is difficult to spot from the street, with only a small portion visible, and that the earth-covered roof provides natural insulation and temperature stability. Large glass walls and skylights admit daylight, countering the typical gloom associated with subterranean dwellings. Nearly five decades later, the home continues to demonstrate how integrating architecture with the environment can yield durability and energy efficiency.
