1Password has been criticized after pledging $300,000 to the Omacom Foundation, the body that oversees Omarchy, a Linux distribution curated by David Heinemeier Hansson. Hansson, known for creating Ruby on Rails, Basecamp and the Hey email client, has repeatedly posted anti-vaccine and anti-immigrant commentary, including a blog entry that suggested deporting certain groups. Critics on social media accused the password manager of backing “ethnic cleansing” and called for alternative services.
Internally, staff reacted with disappointment, prompting CEO David Faugno and co-founder Roustem Karimov to address concerns, emphasizing that the donation does not endorse Hansson’s views. The company highlighted that Omarchy is a major platform among its users, ranking second among Linux distributions used by 1Password customers. The Omacom Foundation also counts high-profile tech leaders such as Patrick Collison, Michael Dell, Jack Dorsey and Tobias Lütke among its founding patrons. 1Password has not provided further comment beyond internal communications.
