1Password launches AI Agent feature that logs in without exposing passwords

1Password unveiled a new service called 1Password for Agents that lets AI bots sign into user accounts without ever seeing the passwords, requiring user approval for each login request.

1Password announced a feature named 1Password for Agents that enables artificial-intelligence assistants to access online services without direct access to stored passwords. When an agent reaches a sign-in form, it authenticates with a unique digital key and 1Password notifies the user about the required credentials and the purpose of the request. The user can approve the login on their own device, after which 1Password injects the password into the form, keeping the secret hidden from the AI.

This process mirrors two-factor authentication and ensures that agents only obtain temporary access for the task at hand. Initially compatible with agents like Meta Muse, ChatGPT Work, Dots, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Town, the company says more partners such as Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, Instinct, Kernel, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo and Wajo will be added.

Why it matters

It offers a safer way for AI tools to perform tasks that require login credentials, reducing the risk of password exposure.
