2023 Winter Games budget tweaked amid ongoing project uncertainties

The organizing committee for the 2030 Winter Olympics approved a marginally higher multi-year budget despite lingering governance and venue issues.

The Cojop board met on Monday, October 12, to endorse a new multi-year financial plan for the 2030 Winter Games, raising the projected spending by a very small margin compared with the October 2025 forecast. The modest rise follows a period marked by a governance crisis and the recent departure of former champion Edgar Grospiron from the committee's leadership. Since the summer, interim president and general manager Vincent Roberti has overseen the completion of a venue layout, the addition of new events, and the allocation of competitions across sites.

These developments have allowed the organizers to refine both revenue projections and expense estimates. The project also saw the ice-sport centre move from Nice to Lyon, adding another layer of complexity to the planning process.

Why it matters

The budget adjustment signals the financial health and planning progress of a major international sporting event.
