2026 Czech municipal and Senate elections conclude, vote counting underway
Voting booths for the 2026 local elections and the first round of Senate elections closed at 14:00, and counting has begun across more than 6,000 municipalities and 27 Senate districts.
The 2026 Czech local elections and the initial Senate round wrapped up at 14:00, prompting immediate vote counting by election commissions and the Czech Statistical Office. Citizens across more than 6,000 municipalities chose councilors, while a third of the Senate seats were contested in 27 districts. Preliminary figures from the smallest towns should appear this afternoon, and comprehensive results are slated for release overnight and early Sunday morning.
Where no contender secured an absolute majority, a second round will be held a week later. Five municipalities that lacked enough candidates will hold supplementary elections in January under the limited authority of interior-ministerial administrators. Approximately 154 candidates vied for the 27 Senate seats, with roughly one-fifth to one-sixth expected to win.
Why it matters
The outcomes will shape local governance and the composition of the Czech Senate for the coming term.
