250-kg WWII bomb found during Chania excavation, prompting massive disposal operation
Authorities in Chania launched a large-scale response after a 250-kilogram World War II bomb was uncovered on a plot on Kritoboulidou Street.
The explosive, estimated at 250 kg and about 1.5 m long, was discovered during digging work. Police, fire units, the national civil protection agency EKAB and a specialised bomb-disposal team from Athens were dispatched to secure the site and defuse the device. The area remains cordoned off while experts carry out the removal.
