30 Years After Dutroux: Two Women Recall Childhood Fear and Stigma

Mélissa and Maryn, now adults, describe how the Dutroux scandal shaped their school lives and neighborhood atmosphere three decades ago.

Thirty years after the Dutroux revelations, Mélissa, then a five-year-old, returns to her old school in Saint-Gilles and reflects on how her name triggered uneasy glances among peers. She notes that several classmates shared her name, creating awkward moments whenever teachers addressed them. Maryn, who lived a short walk from the street where Marc Dutroux resided, recalls the heightened sense of dread that swept through her Marcinelle neighbourhood.

She describes how the case amplified collective fear and even influenced children’s play. Both women say that, for them, the scandal became a way to make sense of an incomprehensible event during their childhood. Their testimonies illustrate the lasting social imprint of the case on a generation of Belgian children.
