31-year-old sentenced to three months for prison assault faces new trial over fatal attack

A 31-year-old man received a three-month unconditional prison term for assaulting an inmate in 2022 and will next week stand trial for a separate assault on a Swedish man who later died at a public screening on Islands Brygge.

In a case stemming from a 2022 incident at Nyborg Statsfængsel, a 31-year-old man and two other inmates were found guilty of beating a fellow prisoner with punches and kicks, inflicting a concussion, a broken nose and a rib. Although initially charged under the severe violence paragraph, the court convicted them under the lighter paragraph 244, each receiving three months of unconditional imprisonment. The sentencing was handed down by the court in Svendborg on Friday.

The same individual is scheduled to appear before the same court next week for a separate case involving an assault on a Swedish man who later died during a large-screen viewing at Islands Brygge. That upcoming trial will also be prosecuted under paragraph 244.

Why it matters

The case highlights how repeat violent offenders are prosecuted and the legal nuances of Denmark's violence statutes.
