44 Men Charged in Brussels Drug Ring Accused of Using Airbnb Rentals
A Brussels criminal court is trying 44 men accused of large-scale drug trafficking that allegedly relied on short-term rentals such as Airbnb to store and process narcotics.
In a trial before the Tribunal correctionnel de Bruxelles, 44 men are on trial for operating an extensive drug trafficking operation centered in the Matongé neighbourhood of Ixelles. Authorities allege the group sold cocaine, cannabis, ecstasy and other substances while using short-term rental properties, notably Airbnb listings, to store and prepare the drugs. Investigators cited a past instance where an Airbnb apartment housed a procaine lab that processed cocaine and other chemicals.
Christophe Wouters, a local narcotics police commissioner, noted that the use of such platforms is increasingly common in organized crime cases. The court proceedings aim to determine the extent of the network’s activities and impose appropriate sentences.
