£6 billion shipbuilding package unveiled, promising work for Scottish yards

At the Labour Party conference, Treasury minister John Healey unveiled a £6 billion programme aimed at revitalising UK shipbuilding, featuring the creation of three floating docks for the HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane. The Methil shipyard in Fife, recently acquired by the Spanish state-owned shipbuilder Navantia in a transaction supported by both Scottish and UK governments, is being promoted as a strong candidate for the contract.

Alexander highlighted that the yard was on the brink of administration before the government-facilitated sale and that Navantia has been seeking guaranteed work. He described the announced funding as a major opportunity for Methil and other British yards. When questioned about securing work north of the border, the Scottish Secretary said a proper procurement process must be followed but voiced confidence in Scottish workers and the broader defence dividend of remaining within the United Kingdom.
