60-Year-Old Injured in Suspected Antisemitic Assault on Berlin Street
A 60-year-old man was assaulted on a Berlin sidewalk in an incident police describe as antisemitic, leaving him with a cut and bruises.
Police say a 60-year-old man was injured during a suspected antisemitic attack on a street in Berlin's Schöneberg area. While seated with a companion on a park bench, he was approached by an unknown person who offered him a beer and inquired about his Jewish background. Upon confirming he was Jewish, the encounter escalated, with the aggressor making antisemitic remarks and attempting to hit the victim with a beer can, which missed.
When the victim tried to walk away, the attacker struck him repeatedly, causing a cut and bruises and damaging his glasses. A witness called the police, and the suspect escaped. The Berliner Landeskriminalamt's State Security division is now probing the case as a dangerous bodily injury motivated by antisemitism. The incident adds to a broader pattern, as the research group Rias recorded over 8,700 antisemitic incidents in Germany last year, including a rise in right-wing-linked cases.
Why it matters
The attack highlights ongoing antisemitic violence in Germany and the need for vigilant law-enforcement response.
