€600 battery grant added to Irish solar scheme to boost home energy storage

A new budget measure will provide an additional €600 grant to Irish households that add a battery storage unit to their solar-panel systems. This support sits alongside the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s existing grant of up to €1,800 for solar PV installations and is a central element of Minister for Energy Darragh O’Brien’s clean-energy push. The Department of Energy projects that a battery paired with a 4 kWp solar array can generate roughly €900 in yearly savings for owners.

More than 100,000 Irish homes have installed solar panels, with a notable spike in 2025 and continued growth in early 2026, and roughly half of these now feature battery storage. Battery costs typically exceed €4,000, but prices have fallen alongside system costs over the past five years. The department is also reviewing the introduction of plug-in balcony solar panels, similar to Lidl’s €299 units sold elsewhere in Europe, pending network and regulatory approval later this year.
