63-year-old diver missing after deep dive at Starnberger See

A 63-year-old sport diver vanished during a half-hour dive to about 40 m at the Allmannshauser Steilwand in Starnberger See and has been declared missing.

On Saturday, a 63-year-old sport diver did not return after a 30-minute dive at the Allmannshauser Steilwand on the eastern shore of Starnberger See. He was diving with two friends in the municipality of Berg, reaching the standard recreational limit of about 40 m, but never resurfaced. The companions attempted to follow his disappearing flashlight before surfacing and reporting him missing.

Police launched a search using drones and a police helicopter, but halted efforts by mid-afternoon. The Allmannshauser Steilwand, a steep underwater wall popular with thousands of divers each year, drops more than 70 m, with sections reaching 85 m, and has a history of fatal accidents. The missing diver’s status remains unresolved.
