64-Year-Old Man Dies After Medical Crisis While Held at NYPD Precinct
A 64-year-old man suffered a medical episode shortly after being taken into NYPD custody in Harlem and later died in hospital.
Officers were dispatched to a Harlem home after a call about a violent male carrying a weapon and took a 64-year-old man into custody for criminal mischief and menacing. Upon reaching the precinct, standard protocol led officers to ask if he required medical help, which he refused. Approximately five minutes after the question, he suffered a medical episode; police performed emergency procedures before an ambulance moved him to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
He subsequently died, and his identity remains pending family notification. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is examining body-worn camera recordings, while the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will issue a cause-of-death report.
