7-Eleven shuts its last Indian stores after Reliance Retail franchise ends

7-Eleven has closed its final 31 outlets in Mumbai and Pune, ending its Indian presence following the conclusion of its five-year franchise agreement with Reliance Retail.

Japanese retailer Seven & i Holdings’ 7-Eleven brand has withdrawn from India, shuttering its last 31 stores located in Mumbai and Pune after the five-year franchise deal with Reliance Retail concluded. The partnership, signed in 2021, had expanded the chain to roughly 60 outlets at its height, but the remaining stores struggled financially, posting about ₹92 crore in revenue and a net loss close to ₹90 crore for the year ended March 2026.

Analysts cite intense competition from neighbourhood kirana stores and rapidly scaling quick-commerce services, as well as the chain’s low density, which made it hard to spread operating costs. This exit marks the end of a second attempt to enter India; a prior agreement with Future Retail was terminated in October 2021 after missed store-opening targets and unpaid franchise fees. While 7-Eleven has not ruled out a future comeback, it is currently focusing on growth in Europe, and rival Japanese chain Lawson is also planning an Indian entry via a local subsidiary.
