£7 million allocated for feasibility study of a potential Northern England Olympics
The chancellor will earmark £7 million in the upcoming Budget for a full feasibility study on hosting a future Olympic Games in northern England.
In the forthcoming Budget, Chancellor John Healey plans to allocate £7 million for a comprehensive feasibility study on the prospect of holding the Olympic Games in northern England during the 2040s. The investigation will detail required venues, transport infrastructure, cost projections and the chances of a successful bid, involving government agencies, UK Sport, the Northern Mayors and the British Olympic and Paralympic associations.
The idea, initially raised by Northern Mayors and supported by former Olympians such as Dame Laura Kenny and Dame Sarah Storey, was previously examined by UK Sport at the government's request. The funding was welcomed by the British Olympic Association, ParalympicsGB and UK Sport, who see potential benefits for the nation.
