7-Year-Old Found Dead After Being Left Inside School Bus in French Guiana
A seven-year-old boy from Sainte-Rose-de-Lima was discovered dead after being forgotten on a school bus that returned to its depot in Matoury, French Guiana.
A seven-year-old resident of Sainte-Rose-de-Lima, enrolled at a local elementary school in Matoury, was found dead after being left on a school bus that returned to its depot on Tuesday afternoon. The bus lacked a badge-reading system because it had recently been swapped for a different vehicle, and no accompanying staff reported the child missing. Sandra Trochimara, president of the Communauté d'agglomération du centre littoral, announced that a series of operational failures were uncovered and that the route has been halted pending investigation.
Isabelle Patient, director of Habitat, Aménagement et Mobilité at the CACL, noted that while children have been forgotten on buses before, this is the first incident ending in death. Mayor Serge Smock confirmed the school will remain open and that psychological support is being provided to students and staff. An inquiry is underway to determine responsibility for the tragedy.
Why it matters
The death highlights serious safety gaps in school transportation and prompts scrutiny of oversight mechanisms.
