70-Year-Old Hiker Rescued After a Week Lost on Isle Royale

Craig Berg set out on a solo hike in Isle Royale National Park near Michigan’s border with Canada and was expected back on September 5, but never arrived for the ferry. After a week of no contact, fellow hikers reported a sighting, leading to a multi-agency response that included the US Coast Guard, Michigan State Police, the National Park Service and several regional law-enforcement bodies. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter hoisted the 70-year-old from the rugged terrain, where he was found injured and hypothermic.

He was transported to a medical facility for assessment, while details of his injuries remain pending. Lt. Ben Eckola highlighted the contributions of K-9 teams, Isle Royale Seaplanes and volunteer groups in the successful rescue.
