9/11 Victim Compensation Fund sees 750 new claims each month, 77,000 approved

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund continues to handle a steady flow of applications, averaging 750 new cases each month, which translates to roughly 25 submissions per day, according to Special Master Allison Turkel. As of August 31, the fund had received over 112,000 claims from people who were at the three crash sites in New York City, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, or who were present in the aftermath during designated periods.

Of those, 77,000 claims have been approved, resulting in $18.56 billion in award determinations, with $1.8 billion paid out across 9,800 cases in 2025 alone. More than 6,000 individuals have died from illnesses linked to the attacks, a death toll that exceeds the number killed on the day itself and is projected to increase. Turkel emphasized that up to 400,000 people may have been exposed to hazardous toxins within the New York City Exposure Zone and urged all potentially affected persons to apply, even if they feel healthy. The compensation program is legally authorized to continue issuing payments until 2090.
