A.P. Moller Capital takes control of Kavala port operations after Euroports acquisition

A.P. Moller Capital, a sister firm of Maersk, has assumed management of the Kavala commercial port following its purchase of Euroports, which had been operating the terminal since January 2025.

Euroports, which began operating the Kavala port in January 2025 under a 40-year concession granted to the SARISA consortium, has been bought by A.P. Moller Capital, the investment arm of Maersk. This change places the port’s operational rights and technical expertise under A.P.

Moller Capital’s control. The Greek government recently included the rail connection to Thessaloniki’s 6th berth in the ESFA "Transport 2021-2027" programme, allocating €60.99 million, of which €45.73 million is co-financed. Market observers say the acquisition will boost Kavala’s cargo handling capacity, especially for bulk and general cargo, and enhance its role as a gateway to the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

They also note that Maersk’s existing presence in Thessaloniki makes a rapid shift of traffic to Kavala unlikely. Concerns remain about competitive pressure on the state-run Alexandroupoli port, which could lose customers to the newly upgraded Kavala terminal.

Why it matters

Control of a key Greek port shifts to a major global shipping investor, potentially reshaping regional trade flows.
