A Romanian man, his mother and aunt detained in Austria over fentanyl patch trafficking
A 38-year-old Romanian, his 54-year-old mother and 62-year-old aunt were arrested in Austria for allegedly selling fentanyl patches that were linked to a fatal overdose.
A 38-year-old Romanian, together with his 54-year-old mother and 62-year-old aunt, have been taken into custody by Austrian law enforcement on suspicion of trafficking fentanyl patches. The case was opened after a 29-year-old Linz resident died from a fentanyl overdose in July 2026. Investigators traced the illicit patches back to prescriptions that were allegedly diverted and sold for profit.
Police are now probing the methods used to obtain the medication and the roles each family member played in the distribution network. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid used medically for severe pain, can cause fatal respiratory depression when misused. The arrests highlight ongoing concerns about the diversion of prescription opioids into the illegal market.
Why it matters
