Aaditya and Amit Thackeray booked after sit-in demanding Gyanesh Kumar's ouster
Mumbai police booked Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and MNS chief Amit Thackeray for leading a sit-in calling for election chief Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.
Aaditya Thackeray and Amit Thackeray were formally booked by Mumbai police following a large sit-in that demanded the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration, held at Shivaji Park, attracted roughly a thousand workers from Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS and resulted in charges of unlawful assembly under section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Earlier, police had barred a separate rally organized by the Cockroach Janata Party and detained about 300 participants.
The Thackerays pledged to continue the agitation on the coming Monday, condemning the police for acting like Delhi authorities and claiming the protest reflects broader resistance to the BJP’s policies. They also highlighted the recent detention of Tushar Gandhi as evidence of a crackdown on dissent. The protestors framed their actions as a citizen-led effort to challenge perceived authoritarianism in the electoral system.
Why it matters
The arrests highlight escalating political tensions in Mumbai and raise questions about police handling of dissent.
