Absa pivots to fintech collaborations to capture younger digital users

Absa Group is teaming up with fintech firms, such as EasyEquities, to embed banking services in apps popular with Gen Z and Gen Alpha, according to senior executives.

Absa Group is pursuing a strategy of partnering with fintech companies to reach younger, mobile-first consumers, a move announced by a senior executive. The bank's new direction follows the appointment of former M-Pesa leader Sitoyo Lopokoiyit by CEO Kenny Fihla to revamp personal and private banking. Lopokoiyit cited the recent integration of EasyEquities into the Absa app as a flagship example, allowing the investment platform to serve the bank's 12 million retail customers while retaining deposits and liquidity inside Absa.

He noted that traditional advertising no longer resonates with digital natives, prompting the bank to embed services where users already spend time. Additionally, Absa plans to launch a payment solution that links personal accounts directly to small businesses in cash-heavy townships, though details remain undisclosed. The initiative aligns with South African Reserve Bank reforms that let non-banks access the national payment system, creating both challenges and opportunities for incumbents.

Why it matters

The partnership strategy could reshape banking outreach to South Africa's youth and boost Absa's competitive position.
