Accidental blaze destroys Tasmania's Tungatinah Power Station, demolition planned

A fire that completely gutted the Tungatinah Power Station in Tasmania's Central Highlands has been classified as accidental by the Tasmania Fire Service. Deputy Chief Officer Matt Lowe explained that investigators identified several possible ignition sources on the assembly bay floor, but the exact cause will be examined over the coming weeks and months. The investigation was complicated by the facility's size, extensive structural damage, and severe weather experienced during the incident.
Hydro Tasmania, working with Tasmania Police and other agencies, has regained control of the site and confirmed that the building must be demolished. CEO Rachel Watson said the extent of damage to the generating equipment cannot be assessed until safe access is restored, and she noted the emotional impact on staff who have long worked at the remote location. When operational, the plant supplied about 5% of Tasmania's electricity, generating 142 megawatts.
