Two blazes that destroyed 19 houses in Stourbridge were caused by farming machinery operating in nearby fields, officials said.
West Midlands Fire Service determined that two separate fires that erupted on 13 August in fields surrounding Stourbridge were sparked by farming machinery operating nearby. The first blaze started at about 13:27 BST near Racecourse Lane, followed quickly by a second fire close to Quarry Park Road. Chief Fire Officer Simon Tuhill stated the fires were accidental, emphasizing that they were not intentionally set.
The conflagrations destroyed 19 residences and damaged an additional 18 properties as the flames spread rapidly through grass and woodland, coinciding with the nation's hottest day, when temperatures reached 38.1°C in some areas. A coordinated response involving fire crews, police, ambulance services and the local farming community was praised as exemplifying the best of Stourbridge and the wider West Midlands. The incident also saw multiple other fires across the region, with paramedics treating 54 patients and 19 requiring hospital care.
