Flawed environmental statistics undermine pollution control and health safeguards, making reliable, timely data from agencies and satellites essential.

Inaccurate environmental data is more than an academic flaw; it creates ineffective policies, misallocated resources and health risks. Decision-makers rely on statistics from the United Nations, UNDP, Eurostat, the European Environment Agency, FAO and Plastics Europe, yet divergent national methods, corporate declarations and incomplete observations compromise their usefulness. The article highlights methane reporting gaps, where bottom-up inventories miss large “super-emitter” releases, while satellite tools like ESA’s TROPOMI expose higher emissions in Canada, Australia and South America.

Plastic-waste figures also vary, illustrated by Ireland’s higher per-capita numbers due to different accounting methods, and chemical-recycling claims can obscure true recycled content. To close these gaps, the piece advocates combining traditional inventories with remote sensing, in-situ sensors, citizen science and AI, alongside robust quality frameworks such as the IMF’s DQAF and the UN’s NQAF.
