ACT cancels Tuggeranong ice arena project after value-for-money concerns

The ACT government has withdrawn support for the Canberra Arena, a dual-sheet ice sports centre once promised during the 2016 election. Chris Steel explained that the latest proposal from Cruachan Investments and Pelligra Holdings presented unacceptable financial risks and asked for a contribution exceeding twice the government's share, making it unviable. The $16.265 million earmarked for the arena will instead fund upgrades to existing sports infrastructure in Tuggeranong, with local clubs invited to submit their needs.

The ice-sport community, represented by Sandi Logan of the ACT Ice Sport Federation, voiced deep disappointment but stressed that the fight for a national-standard rink continues. Logan also praised Geocon’s management of the Phillip ice rink and hinted at possible future collaboration. The government affirmed that the investment will not be lost and will benefit other local facilities.
