ACT expands free menstrual product dispensers to every public school bathroom

Following a student-led campaign that began at an International Women’s Day event in 2021, the Australian Capital Territory has installed free menstrual-product dispensers in the bathrooms of all its public schools. The initiative, which started as a pilot at Canberra High School, now covers primary, high school and college facilities across the territory. By allowing pads and tampons to be taken without asking staff, the program aims to end the stigma and logistical barriers associated with period poverty.

Early data suggest a drop in school-day absences tied to menstruation, and teachers note that pupils also use the supplies for relatives at home. While the rollout is praised as a major step forward, educators highlight the need for broader menstrual education for all students. The ACT became the first Australian jurisdiction to guarantee free access to period products in 2023, and this expansion makes the provision truly universal.
