Acting Prosecutor General Calls for Fact-Finding Review Before Deciding on President Lee's Case

Newly appointed Deputy Prosecutor General Lee Jung-hyun, who is serving in an interim capacity at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, said a fact-finding panel is actively investigating the allegations against President Lee Jae Myung. He stated that the panel’s conclusions must be considered before any decision is made about withdrawing the criminal case. Lee was named to the deputy role by the justice ministry on Tuesday, just before the new prosecution service is set to begin operations next week.

When asked about earlier comments on the propriety of the probe into Ssangbangwool Group’s illegal remittances to North Korea, he reiterated that prosecutors and justice officials have consistently stressed restrained investigations targeting only the specific wrongdoing. The scandal involves claims that the conglomerate transferred funds to North Korea on behalf of the Gyeonggi provincial government during Lee’s tenure as governor.
