Activist Karl Mokaraka interrupts Labour leader Chris Hipkins at Ōtara market rally

Labour leader Chris Hipnings was engaging market shoppers in Ōtara when activist Karl Mokaraka appeared with a Vision NZ placard and began shouting at him, including the question “What is a woman, Mr Hipkins?”. Former Labour Speaker Trevor Mallard moved between them, trying to defuse the situation, but the two bumped into each other, prompting Mallard to recoil. After the brief scuffle, Hipkins left the scene in his vehicle while Mokaraka continued to heckle, accusing the leader of abandoning South Auckland.

Mokaraka, who previously ran for Vision NZ in Panmure-Ōtāhuhu and as an independent for the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board, has a history of disrupting events involving senior politicians such as Christopher Luxon and David Seymour. The episode mirrors earlier disruptions at the same market by Vision NZ and Freedoms NZ supporters ahead of the 2023 election. Despite the rain, Hipkins reported a generally warm reception from attendees before the altercation.
