Actor Richard E. Grant Honors Late Wife Joan Washington on Fifth Anniversary

Richard E. Grant shared an emotional Instagram video on the fifth anniversary of his wife Joan Washington’s death, recalling their 38-year partnership.

On the fifth anniversary of Joan Washington’s passing, Richard E. Grant uploaded a moving Instagram tribute that blended memories with gratitude for their nearly four-decade marriage. Washington, a renowned dialect coach to stars such as Penélope Cruz, died of lung cancer at their Gloucestershire cottage in September 2021. Grant recalled meeting her while seeking a British accent lesson in 1982, their courtship beginning in early 1983, and their wedding on November 1, 1986.

He described her personality as feisty, challenging and hilarious, and said she was the “holy grail” of love he never expected to find. The video, filmed in the same cottage, featured a slideshow of photos and drew condolences from celebrities including Viola Davis, Gwendoline Christie, Alyssa Milano, Glenn Close and Melissa McCarthy. Grant affirmed he is not seeking a new relationship and chose to celebrate their anniversary instead.

Why it matters

The tribute highlights how public figures process personal loss and the enduring impact of long-term partnerships.
