Actress Hayden Panettiere’s memoir reveals postpartum struggles before her untimely death

Hayden Panettiere’s 2026 memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” chronicles a traumatic delivery in December 2014 that involved prolonged labor, a C-section, and numerous blood transfusions, after which she felt no immediate bond with her daughter, Kaya. In the weeks that followed, she began drinking heavily to function, eventually seeking treatment at an upscale rehab center, only to emerge dependent on prescription medication for anxiety and sleep.

A second stint at a European facility followed, during which she was temporarily written out of her TV series and lost a long-standing endorsement with Neutrogena. Panettiere later recognized she was suffering from postpartum depression despite outward success. On August 16, 2026, she was found dead in a Greenville, South Carolina residence; officials said there were no signs of foul play and the cause of death remains pending.
