Actress Urmila Sanawar arrested after extortion and death threat complaint by ex-MLA's daughter

Haridwar police detained actress Urmila Sanawar following a complaint from Deepika Rathore, who alleges the star demanded ₹5 crore, threatened her family and posted defamatory remarks online.

Actress Urmila Sanawar was taken into custody by Haridwar police after Deepika Rathore, the daughter of former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore, lodged a complaint alleging that Sanawar demanded ₹5 crore, threatened to kill her family and posted insulting comments on social media. The complaint also claimed Sanawar sought the transfer of the Ravidas Dham property to her name and accused her of maligning the Rathore family’s reputation.

The arrest occurred shortly after Sanawar and Suresh Rathore consented to polygraph and narco-analysis examinations in the ongoing probe of the 2022 Pauri Garhwal receptionist murder case. During a raid on Sanawar’s Saharanpur home, police seized a mobile phone believed to have been used in the alleged extortion. An FIR was filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. The case adds another layer to the high-profile murder investigation that has already implicated political figures and led to a CBI probe.

Why it matters

The arrest highlights alleged criminal conduct by a public figure and ties into a broader murder investigation involving political connections.
