Ada County Sheriff’s Office links Unknown Wanderer to possible Tylenol murders

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office announced that the man long referred to as the Unknown Wanderer was Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski, an organic chemist who died by suicide in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 1982 after altering his appearance. Betkouski suffered a traumatic brain injury in 1974 and later worked for a flavors and fragrances firm in Jacksonville, where coworkers recalled his talk of a "perfect crime" involving cyanide.

He was dismissed by Lockhead in 1982 after an incident at a pharmacy involving an experiment with pills. Detectives see possible links between Betkouski and the 1982 Tylenol murders that killed at least seven people, but they do not label him a suspect and cannot confirm his presence in Chicago at the time. The office has forwarded its findings to Chicago police, and the investigation will be featured in the upcoming Unsolved Mysteries documentary "Unmasking the Tylenol Killer" on The Roku Channel.
