Adelaide team receives funding to refine radiation therapy for brain tumours

Researchers in Adelaide have secured $240,000 to study how to make radiation kill brain cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue and the immune system.

Adelaide University scientists have been awarded $240,000 under a national initiative from the Mark Hughes Foundation Centre for Brain Cancer Research to advance brain tumour treatment. The project will focus on enhancing radiation's ability to destroy cancer cells while protecting normal tissue and preserving immune function. Professor Ivan Kempson noted that brain cancer survival has changed little in the last 35 years, with only two in ten patients living beyond five years.

Researchers plan to investigate radiation interactions at a molecular level using novel instrumentation that can detect DNA damage more accurately than before. The initiative seeks to raise survival odds and improve quality of life for patients after treatment. The funding marks the first allocation under this fast-track programme.
