ADP reports private-sector payrolls added 38,000 jobs in August, missing forecasts

ADP said private-sector employment grew by 38,000 jobs in August, falling short of economists' 48,000 estimate and below the prior month's revised figure.

According to ADP's August payroll report, private-sector firms added 38,000 jobs, a number that missed economists' forecast of 48,000 and was lower than July's revised gain of 46,000. Chief economist Nela Richardson explained that current wage patterns are being shaped by demographic changes, persistent inflation and the influence of artificial intelligence on the labor market. The data indicated that education and health services led hiring with 45,000 new positions, followed by leisure and hospitality with 16,000, and financial activities and other services each adding 6,000 jobs.

Conversely, manufacturing shed 17,000 jobs and professional and business services lost 16,000. Smaller declines were reported in natural resources and mining, trade and transportation (each down 5,000) and information (down 4,000).

Why it matters

The report signals slower hiring momentum and sectoral shifts that could affect economic outlook and policy decisions.
