Adventurer Karl Bushby Nears Completion of 30,000-Mile Global Walk
After 28 years of trekking, Karl Bushby is within a month of reaching his hometown of Hull, having covered roughly 30,000 miles on foot.
In October 1998, 29-year-old Karl Bushby embarked on a 30,000-mile walk around the world, pushing a specially adapted trolley he calls The Beast and refusing any motorised transport or return to the UK until completion. Over the ensuing decades he has traversed South America, North America, the Arctic, Russia, Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe, enduring imprisonments, robberies, polar bears and a 186-mile swim across the Caspian Sea.
Financial crises and the pandemic caused multi-year delays, and visa restrictions forced a 3,000-mile detour to Washington, DC. Now in Belgium, about 500 miles from Hull, he has obtained special French permission and a support boat to swim the Channel with Angela Maxwell. He expects to set foot in Hull on November 1, after which a Werner Herzog documentary and a new STEM charity are planned.
