AEP chief warns of legal gaps threatening upcoming Romanian elections

Adrian Țuțuianu, who leads the Autoritatea Electorală Permanentă, warned that the lack of complete electoral legislation could make it impossible to hold a proper election. He cited the absence of clear rules for mail-in voting and for citizens voting from abroad as examples that could compromise the vote’s integrity. Țuțuaniu noted the risk that one outlet government might not survive, which would affect the nomination of Siegfried Mureșan and the timing of any snap election.

He called on Parliament to pass detailed regulations for both early and regular elections, emphasizing that such laws should not be issued through emergency decrees. The agency also highlighted the logistical challenges of setting up polling stations for the diaspora within a month.
