AFC to send Jordan FA chief Prince Ali bin Hussein to its courts over Infantino accusations

The Asian Football Confederation announced it will refer Jordan Football Association President Prince Ali bin Hussein to its judicial bodies after he claimed FIFA President Gianni Infantino hijacked the AFC Congress for political reasons.

During an extraordinary AFC congress held in Tokyo, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa publicly endorsed Gianni Infantino’s candidacy for another term as FIFA president. Shortly thereafter, Prince Ali bin Hussein, president of the Jordan Football Association, accused the event of being a political showcase where no one was permitted to address the media or ask questions. The AFC responded that no association had asked to speak and that the congress was conducted correctly, dismissing suggestions of coercion or bribery.

It emphasized that any accusations of misconduct must be supported by credible proof. Consequently, the AFC said it would refer Prince Ali’s statements and allegations to its internal judicial bodies for review under the organization’s statutes. This follows Prince Ali’s earlier public criticism of Infantino, including claims of blackmail and offers of FIFA assistance in exchange for political support.

Why it matters

The dispute highlights governance tensions within world football and could affect future AFC-FIFA relations.
