AfD and BSW push joint peace proposal on Ukraine in Saxony-Anhalt parliament
The AfD and BSW plan to introduce a joint resolution in the Saxony-Anhalt Landtag calling for an immediate cease-fire in Ukraine and the lifting of sanctions on Russia.
After the historic constituting meeting of the Saxony-Anhalt Landtag, the AfD and BSW announced plans to submit a joint peace motion concerning the Russian war in Ukraine. The proposal asserts that sanctions and German military aid have failed and asks the state government to mobilise every tool, especially through the Bundesrat, to prevent further escalation and to pursue a diplomatic solution. It demands an immediate cease-fire, the start of peace talks with Russia, and the removal of economic sanctions to normalise German-Russian trade.
While the resolution carries mainly symbolic weight, its supporters argue it will pressure Berlin and Brussels to reconsider their Ukraine policy. AfD member Ulrich Siegmund and BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht highlighted the need to redirect tax money from war spending to domestic needs. The motion is expected to be debated in a special parliamentary session.
Why it matters
The proposal reflects a growing push in German regional politics to challenge national policy on Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.
