AfD lands historic win in Saxony-Anhalt, sparking migrant uncertainty

In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany achieved an unprecedented electoral success, overtaking the governing conservatives and prompting a mixed reaction among residents. Greens member Mamad Mohamad, a Syrian-born Yazidi Kurd, will become one of the first parliamentarians with an immigrant background, alongside Die Linke’s Mustafa Groener. Mohamad described the win as a “poisoned victory,” reflecting the unease felt by many migrants who fear the new government’s stance on immigration.

Leaders of migrant organisations reported that families are contemplating relocation, while some businesses are questioning whether to remain in the state. Despite worries, officials emphasized that any new administration will remain bound by Germany’s constitutional protections and that other federal states have a duty to monitor the situation.
